So, I'm writing a book on the Gothic subculture. It's something I've wanted to do for a few weeks and I started it up last night. So, I'd like some people to fill it out. If you don't want to, that's fine. Here's the survey:
Name:
Age:
Location(country and, if in US, state):
How did you become interested in the subculture?
When?
How old were you at the time?
What is your favorite band?
How is your local scene?
Do you prefer networking sites or physical conversations?
Who is your favorite author?
How do you describe your style(what you would wear on a regular day and out on special occasions)?
Which band do you beleive is the original Goth rock band?
Have you ever been profiled or discriminated for your clothing choices? If so, how?
How do you feel about Hot Topic?
What would you tell someone who's becoming interested in the Gothic subculture?
What would you tell parents of teens within the subculture?
I'd really appreciate feedback. |

Name:Ash/Ashley/Ashes
Age:23
Location(country and, if in US, state): U.S.A/Massachusetts
How did you become interested in the subculture?saw a prgram when i was little about gothic subculture and was fasinated ever since
When? 8-10yrs old
How old were you at the time? got seriouse about the music when i hit 13-14
What is your favorite band? just one?? :( well i guess my ultimate band in the post-punk/goth genre era is london after midnight, and bauhaus
How is your local scene?slacking but i like it that way, everyone agrees with eachother and theres hardly any drama.
Do you prefer networking sites or physical conversations?physical conversation, network sites are for education purposes only...and to vent....i'm mean....yep.
Who is your favorite author? aher stephen king...lol....j/k ;) but seriously, Ann Radcliffe and Mary Shelley
How do you describe your style(what you would wear on a regular day and out on special occasions)? Casual everyday, black slacks or skirt with t-shirt or tank ranging from skulls, weird eye designs or a band t-shirt, dress up is all about my laces,(or) chains, and satins for bottom wear with pretty to domiatrix style corsetts.
Which band do you beleive is the original Goth rock band?Goth 'properly' started in the late 70s with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus but it had been seen as joy division who most would argue this band to have started it, though joy division claimed themselves as punk.. A lot of different bands influenced the start of the Goth scene and Post-Punk in general.
Have you ever been profiled or discriminated for your clothing choices? If so, how? of course and if it isn't obviouse enough i was classified as a witch or deil worshipper to just a biker chick, which is cool w/ me realy..ya know..whatever..
How do you feel about Hot Topic? it a corporate buisness, they need to make money, the clothes are cheap and expensive but parents with dumb "goth" children beg for it anyways, and they have to go with what is "in". but personally i don't shop there untill i need more purple eyeshadow or tights when the holloween store is out of season....and thats end of that
What would you tell someone who's becoming interested in the Gothic subculture? listen and actually like the music before wearing what you just think looks cool, and if your only doing it for the style, which is fine with me hounestly, just don't go around telling people your the damn guru of all gothicness when you don't even know anything about the music or a single goth band..... and....don't cut yourself..
What would you tell parents of teens within the subculture?just deal with it or don't, if the kid is seriouse about what they are into and know the facts about what they are
into, be supportive and try not to think of them as evil and just think of them as your kid who you love, nothing more. |

Age: 17
Location(country and, if in US, state): Texas
How did you become interested in the subculture? slowly got spoon fed the culture and the style. got to how i am through music and friends
When?over the last few years. hope to progress to be more cyber goth
How old were you at the time? was maybe 14
What is your favorite band? Siouxsie and the Banshees
How is your local scene? pretty much non existant. very few that actually prefer the goth culture that are not posers. the rest listen to whatever
Do you prefer networking sites or physical conversations? both really, but online you can always seem to open up more to others
Who is your favorite author? Amelia Atwater Rhodes
How do you describe your style(what you would wear on a regular day and out on special occasions)? regular day,: black pants that flare out and look like Tripp but are MAC girl that i snagged at a thrift store and a plane black shirt due to school dress code special occasions: knee high lace up black boots, maybe a black tattered skirt OR cut off tripp pants and a band t-shirt
Which band do you believe is the original Goth rock band? To me, with what i started off listening to.. Siouxsie and the Banshees. but in truth, many bands came out during that time that were labeled "Goth".
Have you ever been profiled or discriminated for your clothing choices? If so, how? Yes. due to weather i tie my hair back and also went thru the "emo" hair phase but not going back. tend to get called a dyke among other things for how i dress and look overall. but i tend to not care
How do you feel about Hot Topic? it's too... mainstream. its got hello kitty and tinkerbell. its still a decent store,if you have that kind of money to pay for a pair of pants or a shirt, go for it. if not, Thrift store shop like i do. its easier and provides a cheaper and comfy look
What would you tell someone who's becoming interested in the Gothic subculture? to gain their bearings. listen to the classics, study up on the history and the style. formulate your own niche within the Gothic community. but dont try and label yourself as such if you dont know what your talking about
What would you tell parents of teens within the subculture? to let their children dress this way, but to also talk with them about whats going on, since some delve in too much and start to get into the negative of the style. so talk to the kids, and maybe try to listen to what they are listening to so maybe they can have a good concert buddy |

well where I am from there isn't much of a true goth scene. So, I was being serious with my answer.
Considering I am a mother of 4 children it's not like I am able to dress goth on a regular basis. Because I am ashamed or fake?? No. But because I choose to not subject my children and family to embarrassment and ridicule because of me.
Goth is much more than a look. It's more than the music you listen to. Being goth is a dark personality trait that some possess and some just don't. Some just express their darker side through fashion and music while others find other ways of doing it.
So, my humblest apologies if I did not answer this persons questions according to how you felt as though I should answer them. Was this answer serious enough for you? |

| After I posted this I would like to offer my apologies. At the time that I answered this post I did not realize that the question came from a 13 yr old. I am naturally a sarcastic person and my cynicism just another way that my dark side leaks out. |

How did you become interested in the subculture? That's a little bit hard to explain but I guess it's to express myself. I like gothic architecture.
When? Well, it was most probably last year but I didn't pay much attention till this year.
How old were you at the time? 12
What is your favorite band? Probably Nightwish.
How is your local scene? Mainstream. It's hard to find someone with the same interests as I do.
Do you prefer networking sites or physical conversations? Networking sites. I feel awkward in a physical conversation.
Who is your favorite author? I'm not entirely sure.
How do you describe your style? I would describe it as simple and casual on both regular days and special days though on special days, I might dress up a little bit more formal and if dress code is specified, I'd dress up in my own way appropriately.
Which band do you believe is the original Goth rock band? Back in the days, there were a lot of bands labeled as "goth". Anyways, I'm attempting to learn more about the gothic subculture so...I'm not that knowledgeable.
Have you ever been profiled or discriminated for your clothing choices? If so, how? Not really. I just don't wear revealing clothes but I normally wear dark colours and that's what they keep saying; I should wear more bright colours which I'm not entirely comfortable with.
How do you feel about Hot Topic? There's not a single HT store in Singapore, unfortunately but personally, I rather go to a thrift store with clothes according to my liking.
What would you tell someone who's becoming interested in the Gothic subculture? Umm, this is hard. Let's just say I'll tell them to take it slow.
What would you tell parents of teens within the subculture? Just let them be what they want but discipline them as well. |

1st: Nigthwish is a Metal band NOT Goth. If you dont know what Goth is then dont think you're one. It's like calling yourself a Metalhead but not listening to Metal.
And you're 12... how can it be back in the day really? And you're still confusing Metal with Goth which is not a good thing.
Read my What's Goth and Not thread in the Music section. |

| dj...she did say that she is new to this and still trying to learn about it. Geeze dude cut people some slack already. Just because Nightwish is her favorite band doesn't make her any less goth than any of the rest of us. Should I remind you of your own words on that subject? |

How did you become interested in the subculture?
Long story. It's more of a progression because I started out at around 18 hearing 'safe to be called goth' music of the 80s (which to us now is like looking back at the 90s) thanks to my brother's record collection.
Did my research and got to listen to more and more genres/classifications, interviewed a number of bands online, then it led to reaching out to fellow local goths which was a totally rare breed at the time, made friends and acquaintances spanning from a decade ago and counting, put up goth-oriented sites (MGH being one of them) and ultimately am stomped in too deep with the whole subcultural reference that it's become a major part of who I am.
When?
I went ahead in the above post, sorry.
How old were you at the time?
Hehe.
What is your favorite band?
No favorite/s.
Not every self-proclaimed goth has the exact same musical orientation, they just end up finding a common ground or a sense of camaraderie among the others based on the familiarity in their influences and how such forces have impacted them into becoming who they are .
It's really a continuous process of recognizing the value of the artists and their craft and appreciating them in whatever way.
I prefer listening to budding musicians though because the legends are already getting far too much attention that they're guaranteed to gain more and more devotees even to the point when they reach seniority or worse - post mortem!
How is your local scene?
Healthy.
Do you prefer networking sites or physical conversations?
Networking sites. There's a lot of distractions out in the open, and you can't multi-task to optimize the productivity of your time, still it depends on what the moment calls for.
Who is your favorite author?
None. As much as I want to finish a book, but I just don't have the patience for reading. I already have problems being consistent in other fields. But if you must insist, it'd be none other than Edgar Allan Poe. I was able to go through all his poems and shorts stories before. Fall of the House of Usher was what I'd consider as my personal favorite.
How do you describe your style(what you would wear on a regular day and out on special occasions)?
I used to like plan a lot on outfits for events or gatherings but I realized why put so much effort? A simple black dress code is enough to complement the theme of the party.
If it's an ordinary day, I'd wear anything appropriate preferrably casual polo shirts because this type of clothing suits me best and I'm quite comfortable wearing them.
Which band do you beleive is the original Goth rock band?
This is a little too complicated to answer. It was all about the evolution of the goth sound really, from its punk origins down to how they ended up becoming prolific sonic hybrids later on.
Have you ever been profiled or discriminated for your clothing choices? If so, how?
Nope. I'd slap 'em with my technicolor polo shirts if they do.
How do you feel about Hot Topic?
I just don't care about fancy looks, I mean they're nice to look at, otherwise they wouldn't sell.:)
What would you tell someone who's becoming interested in the Gothic subculture?
Good luck to you and the rest! We're all just human beings. If goth borders on being pretentious then it's not that hard to accept it for what it's worth, but do try to find a valid reason why you intend to get associated with it, because it's not just some spooky halloween costume that you can easily put on whenever you feel like it. |
