| There are so many people with so many definitions of what Goth is-does anyone really know what it is. I was into the Goth scene in the 80s in my teens and have just got back into it in the last few years. To me real Goth was back then. music wise- it was all about the Sisters of Mercy, Southern Death Cult, The Nephilim, All About Eve and all that stuff, a long way from what is considered Goth now. Although I havent worn an extensive Goth wardrobe over the years (and cant for work) I now dress how I feel comfortable when I go out and wear the makeup that I want to wear. yes I may dress differently but dont state to be a goth and if that is what people label me then that is up to them. If Goth is what many people state it is now then I must not be. I just know when I watch certain films or read books or see certain art(especially Victoria Frances) a want comes over me to be part of it all. |

bruja, I can relate to you. I too was into the 80s (during the 80s) dark scene. I think every generation puts its stamp on something. Plus, we have to remember they are coming to something that was around by their BIRTH! Just like when we were in school, some of us thought we'd be ne0-beatniks or neo-hippies. We had no real clue, seriously. We had music, books and some films, but we weren't THERE, so we could never truly relate or BE hippies or beatniks. At least we couldn't be hippies or beatniks like they were. We could wear similar clothes and try to act the same, but we had different surroundings and a different enviroment (the Reagan years still give me bad flash backs, lol).
We gave them Goth, and they've made of it what they have. And remember we also gave them Grunge....ew! Can we ever really be forgiven as a generation for unwashed and tattered greasy people?! LOL
The music has changed - evolved. And what was really shocking can't be that shocking anymore when you can buy it at the local mall! Just like the 60s - some aspects of hippie culture have become rather mainstream - like the clothing and hair, but somethings didn't make it, like "free love". Not everything we were into made it through translation. But it is nice to see, that at least some of these kids are "thinkers", and the world can always use more of these. |

I agree as well I might not have been "with" the scene as I wasn't born at that time. But I have been raised (my parents and uncle) were involved in the scene.
And I agree but the music "Goth" hasn't changed that much really. It's just the medias view of it that has changed. |

| Yes but you should always be (I dont remember the word for it but, dont belive everything people say) even tho I guess they can be right if they lived under that age and listened to Sisters, Bauhaus and the others. |

| Hey Gerard, me and you once had a conversation about this. God, amateurs these days couldn't tell you the first thing about gothic, but yet they are quick to claim it. Anyway, gothic to me is the ability to really take heart to the darker side of things, BUT not letting that control you, instead letting it be the basis of your actions. The world around you is full of violence, so instead of crying about it, you grab a bigger gun or knife to cut a nice size hole into the it's heart(the World). Some may disagree, but then they probably haven't read Paradise Lost...The idea of being gothic started there! Its the poem about Satan. "I rather reign in hell than to serve in heaven." |

And that's where you failed.
Paradie Lost was the first so called "Gothic Metal" band NOT Goth band. Goth has never been about Satan or similar. |

Goths are non-violent, pacifistic, passive, and tolerant. Many in the media have mistakenly associated Goth with extreme violence and hatred of minorities, white supremacy, etc.. A fascination with death. They try "to find a different way of thinking about life, like trying to find beauty in life, pain and death. It's all a quest for immortality..
People have accused or described Goths as being:
Depressed,
Unusually bigoted,
Violent,
Suicidal,
Involved in illegal drugs,
Vampires or believe themselves to be vampires,
Sado-masochists,
Satanists,
Musicians, painters, and other artists,
Computer programmers (although there seem to be a lot of them)
Wearers of black (some wear white and gunmetal),
Dyers of their hair,
Users of white makeup.
Some of the above probably apply to some Goths, but definitely not to all!! |

Stereotypes. Everything you say, how come that people assume that Goths are non-violent and doesn't judge, sure some do some doesn't just like every other person.
A Goth is a person that listens to and likes Goth Rock. |

| Goth is such a bullshit term that society made up. People have to label things they don't understand. Argh. If I really have to define a goth person it would be someone who reflects on the world around them and since the world sucks they try to go against it- through dress, their writings..whatever. |

Actually no. But the society made Goth look like some kind of a subculture which is about being sad or just purely pathetic.
And no your statement ain't correct. |
