| I'm not talking about tribes, architecture, poets or writers. There's a lot more to it that most people don't realize. You must look beyond that mainstreamist ideal. |

| Ok we get the point djazoicer! to you maybe its music; but to those individuals goth means something different. music, the fashion/scene, or mindset. i would hope speak for all to say yes we have read up the history on the music and know how it came to be, I see goth as a sub culture, which views the better ways of art in life. don't get me wrong I'm way from ever claiming the title of goth...... isn't this forum here to share your outlooks and not judge each others. |

Not really it's a forum you can judge someone how much you want.
It's a fact that Goth has nothing to do with a mindset, it's simply a musical genre and a subculture and to be a Goth you simply just need to listen to the music and like it. |

| seems like a lot of diversity on this subject, haha. what about a "goth" that listens to rap music as well as rock and heavy metal(me)? seems to me that goth is everything each of you has said on here. it's music, lifestyle, dress, make-up, being wiccan(me again!), attitude, what you enjoy, you're not goth simply because you like the taste of blood, or because you like death metal, there are others who do, that AREN'T goth. i'm sorry if this has been brought up before, i didn't read all of the posts. i'm new on here as well, so hello to all! |

Hello.
A Goth can listen to what ever music he/she wants. As long as Goth Rock is on that list and you like it. Then it can always be good if you really listen to it also.
Goth is simply persons listening to the same music (Goth Rock) that's the only qualification to be a Goth. Everything else is your personal opinion and has nothing to do with being Goth:
The way you dress
Life style
Opinions
Religion
And so on is personal opinions and should not be a qualification to be a Goth. So no If you really are a Wiccan or looks at everything in life as bad then that's you and doesn't make you more or less Goth. Even tho people in the subculture might look down on you if you try to be as depressed as possible. |

| When people automatically come out and say they are goth, they are most likely not. Goth is not a trend or a way to get approval from other people. Goth is a lifestyle. Most people who classify themselves as goth dont live the lifestyle. Goth is also, to me, a different way of thinking from todays society |

Wow, I've been a guest and I had to register just to reply to this post. I know there are first gen Goths on this forum and I haven't seen much from them.
So, from a true original Goth - here's how it happened in the 80s - at least for my group. Punk came about in the 70s - you had Blondie, Sex Pistols, etc. You had Metal - Anyone look at a cover of any Black Sabbath album?
In the beginning we dressed in black and the Baby Boomers thought we were Beatniks - many of us were, but to tell the truth I could never really get into Jazz that much, etc. Then some rock (because we didn't have the genre Goth yet) came out with a different and "darker" sound.
Plus, many of us actually went to school, read books and were a little different from the usual Preppie and didn't fit with the Pot Heads either.
We took Goth from Gothic. Yes, it had everything to do with all things Gothic - hence all the Victoriana you see around our gen of Goth. Poe, Shelley, architecture, etc. Also the Gothic movement was about a backlash against the Enlightenment that said God, spirits and life after death was an outdated concept. The Enlightenment was about Science. Gothic was about romance, the soul. Celebrating what was now "para", the unknown. And yes, to a great extent Death - Queen Elizabeth was probably the biggest influence on this after the death of Prince Albert, an entire nation went into mourning and wore black and Theosophy came about.
So, flash forward to the 80s - we had the Reagan Years, we had AIDS, we had Star Wars, the Wall came down. We were told by adults that we had NO future. So, two things came out of that - New Wave, that said everything would be saved by technology and Goth that said we are all just waiting for Death, so lets party.
We also had the decline of western ideas of religion. And alternative religions thanks to the aetheist movement started to become more popular. And alternative lifestyles (gay, bi, poly, etc.) started clamoring for equal rights.
So, for my generation it is NOT about black eyeliner and just what CDs you buy. It was about more than that, it was/is a lifestyle for us. And you'd be surprised at how many of us trade in our nightlife look for something more mainstream in the day - for one, it's hard to take photos of small children wearing all black and storm trooper boots, and taking time to lace up in a corset that I can't breath in when I have an 8am class isn't practical.
So, unless you are posting about what Goth is to YOU, don't take on the education of others when you were born after I graduated from HS. |

As I have sources from the people and the bands that was there then I stand by what I have written, and they dont agree with what you just said. But rather with what I have said that it's about the music or rather the sound of it.
And they also say that it doesn't have almost anything with the Gothic litterature and so on to do. |

I have to say I can agree, this is especially true for most American kids, just like Punk for most US teens was buying a cd from the UK or Germany, etc., ripping a t-shirt, giving themselves a mohawk and adding some chains to the ensemble - all to piss off their middle class WASP parents.
You wear a mohawk...where do you think the idea for the first one came from? You probably draw or flash an anarchy symbol around - are you an anarchist-capitalist or an anarchist-socialist? Did you know there is a difference? Did you know the concept came about long before your grandparents were born, oh, sorry your great-grandparents?
(Raben Wulf - german.) Punk was about unemployment, social unrest and general sense of F*** it all among disenfranchised young ADULTS in the UK and quickly spread over Europe. Among some of the more hardcore, it also meant self mutilation, anger, violence and even some racial hatred. Alot of drug use and alcohol abuse went with it as well. Music was the driving force for spreading the ideas and concepts further. Music has always carried ideas faster and farther than books.
In general, most Euro Goths will admit some connection to earlier English Gothic influence. For some of us, we passed the "I want to piss off my parents" phase a long time ago. We are also the generation that has changed alot - politically, socially, enviromentally.
So, wearing black and putting on costumes is a fun thing to do, but it doesn't always make you Goth/Gothic, it just means you like a certain fashion. I listen to a wide variety of music, I read a wide variety of literature, and I have specific political beliefs. None of that changed or changes with my clothes.
The look of Goth has become more main stream - you can get it at any suburban mall in the US. You can buy a Sex Pistols shirt for less than $10 on the internet too, but I seriously doubt anyone over 30 would take you seriously as Punk. I pierced my ear and one time cheek with a large steel safety pin...no piercing pagoda for me. I still love Henry Rollins' views on things - hey, I'd vote him for president! I miss CBGBs like mad. And somewhere I still have a stack of Bauhaus, etc.
So, if I met you IRL, so, you've got a mohawk, you're wearing black and clunky birks....what do you have to "say" - or can all you do is tell me how cool so&so rocks on stage?
For all you baby-goths, I have nothing against you if you just enjoy the "look" or the "sound". Enjoy it! Embrace it. And when you get married and have kids and buy that red minivan, get that killer tattoo lazered off - power to you. I wish you the best. There's room for both (all) of us. |

"I listen to a wide variety of music, I read a wide variety of literature, and I have specific political beliefs. None of that changed or changes with my clothes."
So do I. And the reason I look as I do is just because I like it. I dont try to piss my parents off that would just be stupid as they like the way I look. They looked kind of like me when they were young.. under the 80's.
And I'm not American if you thought so. |
