And...I think abortedlife has got an interesting point...however, the choice of music might also reflect something else...thought provoking.

Goth is exactly what it is. The literature, films (and yes there ARE Gothic films), architecture, etc., do not even need to be mentioned, as they are not requirements for being Goth or the subculture/scene. It's a genre of Rock music that started as an offshoot of Punk, and Goths are fans of that genre of music.

I believe, in agreement to Foamy, That Goth is a state of mind, not a fashion statement. More often than not, people claim to belong to a subculture due to clothing. it. is. BULLCRAP. Clothing is incidental. Same with music. i like a nice, diverse mix of things. it doesn't change who I am. I feel that your views, the way you look at every situation you come across, your ideals, your lusts, and your passions make you who you are. not how much money you have to spend on cheaply-made "alternative" clothing.

goth is a darkness that only the better ppl see unfortunataly not many see it. gothic is a way to be different from the same borring ways of every day mainstream life we dress different we act different but none of us are born gothic like you think you were we turn gothic as we get older because of the way the world is and the way jocks always have to think they are better than everyone else. its a way to fuckin rebel against the normal ways of those cocksuckers who think they can tell us what were gonna do all the fuckin time and it is a state of mind and not just how we dress

*sighs* I hate it when people just utterly DESTROY the meaning of things by only believing the Stereotype.

Tell me, Grim and Fallen, what do you know of the culture outside of music and Hot Topic?

goth to me is just a word. a label people use when they don't really understand the person and their weird ways. same thing with the word 'emo' just a word. just a label.

mmm, although iam new here i must say this is very interesting! what is goth? well i truely think being "goth" is like being "punk", it's a state of mind. it's your personal set of morals/ values/ passions, all rolled in with your basic personality traits. it is how you live your life, not the clothes on your back or the music in your i-pod. those things are just accessories. i guess technically speaking i don't "look" goth. but i see beauty and tragedy in the darkness, the architechture, and literature alone woo me. it's not about rebelling against people or even society as a whole because they did something bad to you. it's about comming into your own, venturing beyond the beaten path and seeing the world thru clear unpolluted eyes, the good, the bad, and the ugly. that is what being "gothic" means to me. i don't shun society at all, but i don't conform to it either. i see what i want to see, never what they tell me.

I was raised a goth, I was blessed a goth. I am a goth. But what is a goth now? years ago it was a culture a way of life for some many people....now? Well, its like any other stereotypes isnt it?

To my family and I goth is a way of life. A way of thinking and a way of being. Yet there are so many people out there who are 'goth fashion followers' or 'goth cause thier life is shit' or 'goth cause the cute guy next door is'. It hurts to see so many people misunderstanding the goth way of life. It is a thought process, a way to live your life and a way to be.

A goth will always be a goth, no matter what they wear. I'm sick of people telling me I'm not a goth, cause I don't have a full black wardrobe or I'm wearing a blue dress to the formal. A goth doesn't always wear black clothes, part of, well gothism if you want to call it that, is being comfortable with who and what you are.

A goth doesn't always lsiten to heavy metal about suicide and depression. I don't. I agree I do like some of the music, my great grandmother (who is ninety and still dyes her hair black in goth tradition - yes black hair is a trade mark goth sign today but it has been for years) loves my heavy metal CD's but she tells me all the time that I should listen to other music to blend in with other people.

That's another misconception of goth, we stick to our on people because we are deppressive, individual and secretive. I have friends in all aspects of life, from all walks of life and belong to all the stereotypes that society seems to place on us. My friend in Australia for example, she's what you would call a prep or a plastic. I have a close male friend who is a jock. I have skater friends. I have goth friends. We all get along. We all talk to one another because we all have a respect for oneanother.

Society is to blame for the loss of the true meaning of goth. Placing people into a category, then isolating those who said 'f you, I want to be me!' and made them the poeple who wear black clothes, listen to death metal and call them goths. Goth is gone. There are so few real goths left in the world. That hurts. I know you might think i'm just some kid who thinks they know it all. But I was rasied with Goth, I lived, breathed, ate and slept Goth since I was born. I know the teachings. I know what Goth is. Please don't misinterpret what I am saying becuase you think I am just another kid who thinks they know it all. Don't be. I do know what five generations of Goths have seen happen over the years and I know that goth....is no longer Goth.

Sometimes i think of holding a funeral.

"A goth doesn't always wear black clothes, part of, well gothism if you want to call it that, is being comfortable with who and what you are. "

"It hurts to see so many people misunderstanding the goth way of life. It is a thought process, a way to live your life and a way to be. "

You and your family obviously are not Goths, nor do you know what Goth is.

Goth CAN be a way of life for some people, but anyone who was in the scene in the 80s or the late 70s would know that Goth isn't "a thought process" and it is not "being comfortable with who and what you are." Heck, most of the people who are replying don't know what Goth is. What Goth is, is not an opinion either, it's not whatever you want it to be. Goth is a genre of music and a subculture based on that music. The only way Goth is someone's lifestyle, is if they are involved in the music scene, by going to the clubs, shows, and festivals a lot; therefore, making that music and music scene a big part of their life.

"A goth doesn't always lsiten to heavy metal about suicide and depression. I don't. I agree I do like some of the music, "

If you were Goth, you would also know that Goth Rock is not the least bit similar to Heavy Metal.

"my great grandmother (who is ninety and still dyes her hair black in goth tradition - yes black hair is a trade mark goth sign today but it has been for years) loves my heavy metal CD's "

Considering there were no Goths before 1978 (unless you want to go back to the Germanic Goth tribes that no longer exist and have nothing to do with the scene from the 20th century), and again that Goth music is not the least bit similar to Heavy Metal, I doubt your great grandmother is Goth. Your grandmother would have been in her 60s when the first Goth bands came out, and somehow I doubt that she got into the music at that age.

"Society is to blame for the loss of the true meaning of goth"

And people like you who obviously know little to nothing about what Goth actually is and the beginning of the scene/music, and who spread false information to a bunch of ignorant kids/teens who don't know any better than to believe it.

"Goth is gone. There are so few real goths left in the world"

This is also bullshit. A lot of EBM, Futurepop, and other music is played at Goth clubs and festivals, and there are a lot of people who think they are Goth when they are not, but there a lot of those clubs also play Goth Rock (which wasn't the only style of music played at the original clubs either) and there are a lot of people who listen to a lot of Goth Rock and are involved in the scene. And that's all Goths are, fans of Goth Rock.

"But I was rasied with Goth, I lived, breathed, ate and slept Goth since I was born. I know the teachings. I know what Goth is"

If you're not making it up, you were raised wrong.

Goth is a way of life. It's nothing which you see with your eyes, you feel it deep down inside yourself ...

Goth,to me is being able to see innocence and beauty in the darkness,it's how your SPIRIT feels,it's how you live your life.
You have your OWN rules, not the stereotypical rules that the snobs and rich kids set for their "groupies".....Gothic is being able to have your "posse" of friends that love you for YOU,not what materialistic things you have.....Gothic is a state of mind, there's NOTHING wrong with Hot Topic,JUST because people call it a "poser" store,so what? I shop at Hot Topic,Journeys, and I'm not a "poser" i really could fucking care less if you called me a poser....Gothic is being able to take insults without tears or anger,or running away....Being able to take an insult and throw it back at them much worse than what they said to you........Thats what I think of being Gothic.....I"M GOTHIC AND PROUD OF IT!
