| My friend manages a Hot Topic, and from what I gather, goth is men in womens jeans and childrens t-shirts. When did this happen? Last year they were calling that "hardcore". Hardcore isn't for pretty boys. Goth is, but not pretty boys in blue jeans and "Yo Gabba Gabba" shirts. I'm lost. SOMEONE GET ROGUE! HE CAN TELL US WHAT GOTH IS! |

| Okay, I am about to state my opinion, so don't come at me with insults, I'm just saying what I feel. I think that goth is a mentality of not necessarily darkness or hatred, but rather discontent towards the future that is coming. It is understanding that there is no happily ever after, and that we should live life as we want to here and now, be it in a dark way, in a peaceful way, etc. etc., which is why I think you can't be "labeled" goth by what you wear or how you look, and if by someone who doesn't understand what the future holds, then even by your state of mind, only by an equal. This is what brings together, a common state of mind as far as where the world will be in a few years, not who is morbid, who is preppy, etc. etc., thats why there can be Gothic people of all religions, races, genders, and mentality. Because we are all DIFFERENT, but we are the same in some aspects, which is also why some like goth music only, some ~like me~ like almost every type of music, some like religious art, some like dark art, the differences are limitless. The similaritys are not fully known, which is what makes goth something you can't call yourself. You can't call yourself what cannot be completely defined, as I haven't even begun to finish this discussion, and I'm sure people will put my opinion down. You see? No ones goth, everyone is different, goth is everyone, everyone is the same. Figure it out. |

Trademark of goth is black clothing, pale skin though other colors are acceptable in moderation. Mucho eyeliner. The Gothic Tradition As well as being a Vampire site, I am also interested in the Gothic tradition and fashions. The word 'Gothic' brings to mind images of lust, greed, excess, evil and ruin. It was a time when the rich were rich and the poor were very poor. People gorged themselves in anything to hand, and it has left a mark on our society today. 'Gothic' is now often seen in a different way. It has always symbolised an elite group of people who wish be 'different', to stray outside of the 'norm'. What was once political, now seems to be about fashion. Goths of today are still often poetic and arty, and oppressed by society. However they are no longer the people of high fashion in elegant lace. They dye their hair black, and pierce themeselves in sometime unimaginable places, and listen to rock and punk music. In this section, I will show you my perception of 'Goth'. The Gothic tradition seems to have been a prominent theme in our society for the last four hundred years. Contrary to popular belief, it is not all about gore and horror. Instead it is closely related to the Romantic tradition that followed the enlightenment. In the sixteenth century, astrologist Copernicus displaced the Earth from the center of the cosmos and replaced it with the sun. The people began to realise that the universe did not revolve around them, and that they were merely a minute part of something much greater. Very qui ckly, the world came to be helio-centric, rather than God-centric, and later on this became a Science-centric universe. As a consequence of this, people sought to find new paths to fulfilment. Some found a spiritual fulfulment, and this is where the Gothic/Romantic movement began. It is at this time that stories about ghouls, goblins, Vampires and faries began to get popular. Images and ideas were portrayed through art and poetry, and this was transferred into the world of fashion. This is shown in the architecture of the time. The popularity of Romanticiam comes.. Emo- A bit like goth, but with more tears and emotion. Frequently into music. How to identify an emo kid: Dark clothes and eyeliner, looks distant and troubled. |

heres a clue for you "gothic guru"= first goth is a "barbaric" tribe rebelling against the roman empire in past history, then a word decribing european archetecture,then goth is a fashion based out of the music formed in the 80s/90s....so technically its just a !!DESCRIPTIVE WORD!! for a fashion statement reflecting the music less then the "way of life" it is confused with today.
though it still can be looked as a way of life...,i guess,if you want it to,doesn't mean its true.when it comes to people,not history, no what you get out of horror movies, when it comes to just people, ITS NOT ANYTHING ELSE BUT A WORD TO DESCRIBE THOSE WHO LISTEN TO GOTHIC MUSIC, and i'm talking real gothic music, NOT metal or black metal which everyone thinks is goth.its just how the "goth thing" started.
if your into poetry, your into poetry not because your goth, if you hate the world and worship satan, you hate the world and worship satan not because your goth, and if you have tatts and peircings, you have them NOT BECAUSE YOUR GOTH...
